About the Fund
Imagine a vibrant space where the future of theatre unfolds in real time. This was artist Philip Cuomo’s dream. Those of us who were lucky enough to know Phillip remember him as an incredible force of creativity and connection in Portland theatre. He transformed countless lives as an artist, clown, administrator, teacher, and leader.
Philip's family created The Cuomo Theatre Fund in September 2021 to continue his life work. The Fund's first project is purchasing and preserving the building on NW Raleigh Street as a collaborative home for Portland's performing arts–a place for people to create and gather for years to come.
The Fund has grown from one artist's dream to a shared commitment among three theatre companies, hundreds of artists, and thousands of audience members and supporters. Together, we are claiming a space for creation, collaboration, and connection in a city where artists are increasingly pushed to the margins.
“The Cuomo Theatre will provide affordable, permanent space for theatre companies to rehearse, perform, and grow, ensuring that these companies remain a part of Portland’s arts landscape, preserving creativity and innovation for future generations.”
“The establishment of the CTC—and its eventual ownership of the property in Northwest—secures the future of the three theaters and predicts a wealth of new opportunities for Portland artists. Notably, the CTC cements the legacy of Philip Cuomo, CoHo’s longtime leader and a beloved actor, director and mentor to countless Portland theater artists”
“Transforming the theater into a full performing arts center is an impressive and exciting feat, said Gary Cole, one of CoHo Productions’ two co-founders ... this mission is especially relevant now as beloved venues across Portland continue to close”
Support Portland Theatre
Artists across Portland need access to affordable spaces to create, explore, gather, and share. But over the last several years, many artistic and community spaces have closed. Portland is losing the spaces that make theatre possible. This is a rare moment for our community to come together to protect an artistic space before it disappears.
Your support helps preserve this building, sustain Portland’s creative workforce, and ensure that theatre continues to thrive in our city.
